Snowstorm coming… will your setup handle it?

Got hit with over a foot of snow and 2 ft snow drifts. My snow blower batteries needed a few charges to clear it all. Good thing I’ve got off-peak charging rates with my car. Anyone else making the most of off-peak rates?

With all that snow, I had to recharge the snow blower a few times. Off-peak charging from the car helped cut down on the cost. Anyone else using their car battery for stuff like this?

Ever thought about how much energy you’re losing converting DC from the car battery to AC for the chargers, and then back to DC for the blower batteries? Makes me wonder if the savings are worth it.

@KintaKinta
Yeah, I was wondering about that too. My off-peak rate is about 40% cheaper, so I’d need a lot of loss for it to not be worth it.

@KintaKinta
Is there really that much energy stored in those batteries? Feels like a lot of effort for not much in return.

They’re usually 5 or 6.5 AH, I think.

If it’s 5AH at 48v, that’s about 240 watts for an hour, right? So like 0.24 kWh in that battery? Doesn’t seem like a huge savings to me.

Got enough juice left to powerwash the car after? :slight_smile:

I wonder if I could use that off-peak charging trick to heat my hot tub…

I’ve got the same three chargers. Let me guess… the one on the left is from the lawnmower, the middle one’s from a leaf blower, and the right one’s from a snowblower? I actually picked up an extra rapid charger on eBay for cheap. Makes a big difference when the batteries are overheating.

@alexander
Nailed it! Those slow chargers are so annoying… really need another rapid one.

Still blows my mind that a $70k car comes with those slow-ass level 1 chargers.

@Kiatalks
Dealership called it an ‘emergency charger’… made me laugh.

Did you mean to call it ‘snow problem’ instead of ‘no problem’? Just saying.

What’s the difference between V2L and the regular plug in the back? Are they the same thing or what?

Pretty much just for convenience here in the US.

Where do you even get an adapter for V2L? Is it easy to find?

Mine actually came with the car, believe it or not.

Wait, really? Should I ask my dealer about it?

@CAROL
Check your frunk, mine was in a black case when I got it.
