How is your 2016 Kia Soul getting 517 miles on a full tank?

My 2016 doesn’t even get 300 miles on a full tank.

How are you getting that many miles? Hypermiling?

What is hypermiling?

Yes, it’s hypermiling, with the AC off and driving at 45-50 mph on the interstate.

Damn.

Over 420 miles is physically impossible. Even if you filled it up to the top.

Not if you know what you’re doing. It’s not a Kia, but in my wife’s Elantra, I made it from Arizona to Southern California on three-quarters of a tank. If you hypermile, you can get a lot out of your gas. In that Elantra, I’ve even gotten almost 55 mpg on the highway if I really try.

Nice! I went from Albuquerque to Buellton on two tanks in my Soul.

I think when I drove from Morro Bay to Riverside, I made it from Buellton to Riverside on about half a tank. I filled up and it said 549 miles?

In a Soul? The most I’ve ever seen is 406 miles, and that was just once. Normally, it’s around 365.

No, that was the Elantra. I haven’t seen the Soul get that far, especially when my wife drives it. It’s mostly city driving. I think the last time I filled it up, it got just under 300 miles. I tease her about it.

Ahh, okay. I thought you were talking about the Soul! Makes much more sense now.

What’s hypermiling?

It’s generally about getting up to speed, then taking your foot off the gas and coasting as much as possible before you hit the gas again. On the freeway, you drive a bit slower to make the most of your fuel. You can find a couple of YouTube videos for a better explanation!

That’s insane. Mine only gets 22 around town and maybe 28-30 on the interstate.

I get about 38 on the interstate, but I can’t drive at 45-50 like OP because you’ll get run off the road here if you drive that slow.

I’m in Florida, so I drive about 80-90 mph. I know that kills my mpgs. The best I’ve ever gotten is 36, but that was when I was going 65-70 mph.

[Bumper sticker reads…] Go around, I’m hypermiling

My 2014 only gets 22-26 according to the odometer. I don’t think it tracks mileage accurately anyway.
