It feels like my hybrid isn’t even helping. The temperature outside was 1 degree and it’s making it even worse. Can’t wait for spring to finally get here.
Haha, you drove for just 9 minutes. Any car’s MPG estimate will look off at that point. Reset it on a normal day, drive a little more, and it’ll be more accurate as the car warms up.
I work 4 minutes away from home and warm up my car before work. My 2023 Forte usually shows around 20 MPG too, even worse in the winter.
Why are you stressing over these numbers? You burned about 0.1 gallons, that’s only a few dimes worth.
Interesting. That’s about 11.5L/100km for us in metric countries. That’s about what I get in my 2.4L ICE Soul for short cold trips. On the highway, it’s better, around 8.5L/100km or 26.7mpg. I mostly drive less than 10 km, which is why I’m thinking of getting a PHEV next.
@Hannah
I just bought a Kia Sportage plug-in hybrid. It cost me $43k and I love it. But I do need to get the 240v cord for the dryer plug because charging with 110 is way too slow.
I live 7 minutes from college. My street parking permit is only for the evenings and nights, so I have to drive and fight for a parking spot instead of biking when the weather’s nice. My car isn’t great for fuel economy either.
My Telluride only gets 6mpg for that drive.

I’m pretty sure my old car, a Seltos, would be similar.
Same here. I work and study nearby, so I’ve only racked up 8k miles in my 2024 Seltos, and I got it in November 2023.
My other car gets 13mpg in the summer. Could be worse, I guess.
I wish I could get that in my Telluride. I only get 12mpg.
This is confusing. My mileage drops a lot when the heater’s on (I drive a 23 Niro), but it does fine with the AC. Any ideas on why this happens?

I think it’s because the AC runs off the electric battery, but the heater needs the engine to generate heat to warm the cabin. I read that somewhere.
@Billy
That makes sense. Thanks .
Hybrid?

Yeah, hybrids are less efficient in the winter, especially on short trips, which is most of my commute. It’s a well-known issue, but it still stinks.

What about EVs? Can’t be any better, right? Might be worse.
@BillSmith
I’m not sure, but from what I’ve read in the EV forums, people are seeing range drops of 15-30% depending on the temperature, with 0-20°F being the worst.
