Touching up a small chip on Kia Sorento cargo door... need some advice

I’ve got a new Kia Sorento and noticed a small chip on the top of the cargo door. I wanted to fix it up quickly to avoid any rust, but I was told that part of the door might be plastic. Does that sound right? I also bought a bottle of touch-up paint from the auto parts store, and the salesperson told me it already has the clear coat mixed in. But when I checked online, it said the clear coat should be applied separately after the base coat dries. Not sure which advice to follow. Any thoughts?

Yeah, if it’s the rear spoiler part on the top of the liftgate, it’s definitely plastic. No need to worry about rust there.

That’s a relief. Thanks for confirming!

I’ve heard of some touch-up paints with the clear coat mixed in, but I usually do them separately to be safe. It gives a nicer finish in my experience.

Makes sense. I’m leaning towards doing them separately just to be sure.

It depends on the brand. Some touch-up paints do include clear coat, but you can always add another layer of clear coat afterward for extra protection.

Good point. Maybe I’ll just throw on a clear coat layer for peace of mind.

I used the O’Reilly brand before, and it did a decent job. You could still add a clear coat if you want a little more shine and durability.

Thanks, I think that’s the way I’ll go. Better safe than sorry.

Just make sure the surface is clean before applying the paint, especially since it’s plastic. You’ll get a smoother finish that way.

Got it, I’ll make sure to clean it up well beforehand.
