Thinking of getting a Sorento or EV9… What’s better?

Has anyone here tried both? We’re a family of five with kids who are 16, 13, and 11. We live in BC, Canada. We’ve been using a 2017 Odyssey, and we love it, but we want to move towards something more electric. I’ve heard mixed opinions about the EV9, but I don’t know much about the Sorento. If anyone has driven both, what do you think? Which one is better overall?

The Sorento might be too small for what you need. Maybe compare the Telluride and the EV9 instead.

I love my 2025 Sorento, but the third row is tight. It works for kids, but adults or bigger teenagers won’t be very comfortable.

I have a 2022 Sorento Hybrid and tested a 2024 EV9 for three months. If you have easy access to charging, the EV9 is much better. It’s bigger, fully electric, and has more features, but it’s also way more expensive.

Really happy with my Sorento.

Same here. Love my 2025 Sorento.

The Sorento is nice, but it might not be big enough for your family. The third row is pretty cramped. If you’re choosing between the Telluride and EV9, I’d go with the EV9.

The 2024-2025 Sorento models in Canada are mostly trouble-free. The US versions seem to have more electrical and engine problems.

I don’t know much about the EV9.

I have both. The EV9 is definitely better when it comes to space and comfort.

They’re very different. The EV9 is basically an electric Telluride. If the Sorento is big enough for you, great. If not, look at the Telluride. Then decide if you want a gas engine or an EV.

We liked the Telluride but went with a Sorento PHEV because of the low gas mileage on the ICE models and the high price of the EV9.

I seem to be in the minority, but my 2023 Sorento Plug-in has had a lot of issues. The transmission had to be completely replaced, I had a radiator leak, and multiple defective airbags. I do like the car when it works, but once the warranty runs out, I’m selling it.

I like our Sorento PHEV, but test drive one to see if it suits you. I have two teenagers, and we only use the third row for short trips or driving friends around. We did a three-hour trip with teens in the third row once, and it wasn’t very comfortable.

The Sorento PHEV is cheap to run. The EV9 would be even cheaper, except for the price of the car itself. I’ve fit five adults in my Sorento, and it was fine, but I wouldn’t do a long road trip that way. Think about how much space you need and whether charging is easy for you. The EV9 should be fine in that regard, but try it out before buying.

What about the new Santa Fe? It’s huge and looks great… at least to me.

I haven’t driven the EV9. I love my 2025 Sorento Hybrid, but three kids might make it feel cramped. It’s just my husband, me, and our dog, so it works for us. The price difference is also something to think about.

We’re also in BC and have a 2025 Sorento EX. The third row is fine for short drives, but for anything longer, I wouldn’t recommend it for teens or adults. It’s okay, but I’d consider something bigger. The wait time for the Sorento PHEV was about 1-2 years in my area as of November. Some people have been on the waitlist since 2022. We didn’t try the Telluride, EV9, or Carnival, so I can’t compare them.

I have a 2025 Sorento X-Pro Limited. It’s great for four adults. The third row is a bit tight for long trips. If that’s a concern, maybe look at the Kia Carnival instead. Otherwise, the Sorento is a solid choice.

I have a 2022 Sorento PHEV and rented an EV9 for 10 days. Both had the 6-seat captain’s chair setup, which is much more comfortable than the 7-seat option.

If you’re coming from an Odyssey, just go for the EV9. You won’t regret it. It’s an amazing EV. We took it on a couple of long trips, and charging was never an issue.
