Got a recall notice for my Kia Soul, something about fire risks. Apparently, models from 2012-2016 with the 1.6-liter engine are at risk . They say it has to do with the catalytic converter overheating and messing with the engine. Anyone else going through this? Wondering how bad it really is… like, should I stop driving it until they fix it?
Yeah, same here. It’s crazy how many cars this recall covers. Over 378,000 Souls alone.

Wait, for real? What’s causing all these fires?

Apparently, if the catalytic converter overheats, particles can get into the engine and mess up the pistons. If a piston rod breaks, it might punch a hole in the engine block, and oil leaking from there could catch fire.
IDK if I’d risk driving it… If the check engine light comes on or you hear knocking noises from the engine, you might already have damage.

That’s good to know. I’ll keep an ear out. Thanks!
Kia’s supposed to update the catalytic overheating protection system and the engine control unit. If the catalytic converter’s already damaged, they’ll swap it out. They might even replace your engine if it’s bad enough.
@Cynthia
Wow, engine replacement sounds serious… do you think it’ll cost anything?

Nah, the recall covers it. If you already got it fixed, Kia will reimburse you. Just keep your receipts handy.
This isn’t just a Kia thing… Hyundai models like the Tucson and Sportage got hit with fire recalls too. Same parent company.

Makes sense now. I saw a mention of Hyundai in the notice but wasn’t sure what they had to do with it.
FYI, they’ll send out the recall notices by April 8. So, if you haven’t gotten yours yet, just wait it out.

Good to know! I was wondering when I’d hear from them.
