How do the Kia Sportage and Mazda CX-5 compare?

How do the Kia Sportage and Mazda CX-5 stack up against each other?

I’ve test-driven both the CX-5 GT and the Sportage SX, and here are the key differences I noticed:

  • The CX-5 was slightly quieter, while the Sportage had more tire/road noise, possibly due to the wider tires. Both had 19" wheels.
  • The Kia felt noticeably faster, there’s some turbo lag, but it really picks up speed once it gets going.
  • The rear seats in the CX-5 felt more cramped compared to the Sportage.
  • The Kia’s infotainment system is definitely better, offering Android Auto/CarPlay, although I didn’t test them.
  • I didn’t focus much on the audio, but I preferred the Bose system in the CX-5 over the Harman Kardon in the Kia (I sampled some jazz and classical music in each).

Handling felt similar between the two, though I didn’t push them hard during the test drive.

I’ve been researching on forums, and from what I’ve gathered, the Kia seems to have more reported issues. However, Kia offers an excellent 5-year/60K mile warranty.

Pricing is fairly comparable for both. I’m trying to get a sense of how each vehicle will age and how others who have driven both made their decision.

P.S. I currently drive a 2010 CR-V, which has been very reliable, but the freeway noise is awful. I test-drove the new CR-V, and while it’s improved, it still doesn’t match the quietness of the CX-5 and Sportage. Most reviews I’ve read suggest the 2017 CR-V and CX-5 have similar road noise levels, but that wasn’t my experience at all. Otherwise, the new CR-V is an excellent SUV.

I test-drove both the CX-5 and the Kia Sportage SX, and for me, the Kia was the clear winner. There was no competition. It outperformed in every aspect. Plus, the Kia warranty is actually 10/100 on the powertrain and 5/60 bumper to bumper, which is a significant factor when considering long-term ownership.

The stock Kumho tires are noisy and don’t perform well on ice and snow! :frowning: I’ve owned 3 Hyundais and 2 Kias, so I’ve experienced this firsthand. Cooper tires are a good, reasonably quiet alternative, I’ve used them on all these vehicles!

The Sportage is faster and has more room inside, especially in the back seats. It’s good for people who want a powerful car with lots of space.

The CX-5 is quieter and more comfortable. It’s good for people who want a smooth and quiet ride.

Both cars might break down, but Kia has a better warranty. So, you should choose the one that’s best for you.

If you want a fast and roomy car, get the Sportage. If you want a quiet and comfortable car, get the CX-5.
