Car stalls briefly when I turn on the AC... anyone else have this issue?

Hey everyone, whenever I turn on the AC in my 2008 Kia, the car shakes and feels like it’s going to stall, then it goes back to normal. It doesn’t happen every time, but often enough to be annoying. Also, sometimes the power steering feels off, especially when turning. My husband thinks it might be an issue with the belt or something in the belt system. Anyone else dealt with this?

That sounds like it could be a problem with the compressor or maybe the power steering pump. Both are connected to the belt system, so they could definitely affect each other.

Thanks, that makes sense. I was worried it might be something more serious.

Yeah, if one of those parts is failing, it can put extra load on the engine. Good idea to get it checked out soon.

I had a similar issue on an older car. Turned out to be the alternator not handling the load well. Might be worth testing that too.

Good tip. I’ll look into getting the alternator checked as well.

If the belt itself is worn or loose, it can cause a lot of strain, especially when the AC is on. Replacing it might help.

Makes sense. I’ll definitely have it checked. Thanks.

Sometimes it’s just that the compressor is struggling a bit due to age or wear. You could try cleaning it if possible, but if it keeps up, replacement might be the only option.

Agreed. These things just get old and need a refresh now and then.

Should be fine to drive for now, but definitely get it checked if it gets worse. Safe travels.
