I’m trying to change the rear brake pads on my 2017 Kia Niro, but I can’t get the caliper cylinder to push back in. Is there some trick to this, or am I missing something?
You actually need to screw the piston back into the caliper. It doesn’t just push in. There’s a special tool that helps with this—you use it with a ratchet and extension.

Ah, that explains it. Guess I need to get that tool.

Yeah, without the tool, it’s tough. Sometimes you can use needle nose pliers to turn the piston, but it’s a bit tricky.
You can find the tool at most auto parts stores, or even online. It’s worth having if you plan to do your own brakes.

I’ll check online. Thanks for the suggestion.
Make sure to turn it clockwise when you’re screwing it back in. If you turn it the wrong way, it won’t go in.

Good to know. I probably would’ve tried the wrong way first.
I had this issue with my Niro too. The tool makes it way easier. Without it, you’re pretty much fighting with the caliper.

Yeah, sounds like I’m stuck until I get that tool. Thanks for the heads-up.
If you’re in a pinch, some auto parts shops will rent out the tool, so you don’t have to buy it if you only need it once.

Didn’t think of that. Might be a good option if I can’t find one locally.
