I’m working on my 2013 Kia Sportage 2.4L, and I’ve found bearing chips in the oil. I’ve already pulled the rod caps on cylinders 1, 2, and 3, and the wear seems normal. So, it looks like the issue might be with cylinder 4. I understand I’ll need to remove the lower part of the block to get to it. I’m just wondering if anyone knows if it’s possible to do this job in-frame, or am I wasting my time? The engine bay is tight, and I’ve been working on it for a couple of days now.
It’s possible, but it’s definitely a challenge. You’ll need to make sure you have enough clearance to slide the engine forward to clear the dowel pins on the bell housing. Removing the AC compressor and other components will give you more room to work.
@Faithjones
Yeah, I’m already working on getting the AC pump out of the way. It’s been a pain, but I’m getting there.
I’ve done this job in-frame before, and it’s tight, but doable. Just be patient, and make sure everything is supported properly when you separate the lower block. Realigning everything during reassembly can be tricky, so take your time.
@Thomasenia
Thanks for the confirmation. I’ve got time, so I’ll just keep plugging away at it.
If you’ve got the tools and the experience, you should be able to pull it off in-frame. I’ve seen people do it, but like you said, it’s not an ideal design to work on.

Yeah, the block design is definitely not fun to work with, but I’m determined to get it done.
It’s possible to do it in-frame, but if it gets too frustrating, you might save time in the long run by pulling the engine. That way, you can access everything easily and get a proper look at the crankshaft.
@MalikTheKing
I’ll see how it goes. If it gets too bad, I might pull the engine, but for now, I’ll keep going in-frame.
Just make sure you’ve got everything supported well when you start loosening the block. It can get tricky if the engine shifts on you.

Good advice. I’ve got an engine support in place, so hopefully, it won’t move around too much.
