Are Kias Really Easy to Steal?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been hearing rumors that Kias are easy to steal. Is there any truth to this? If so, what makes them a target and how can I make mine more secure? Any tips or experiences would be awesome!

Thanks!

Hello Samuel, Kias are perceived as easy to steal due to vulnerabilities in certain older models without immobilizers, making them targets for thieves. This issue gained attention in 2021 and 2022. Manufacturers have added security features to newer models. Owners of older models should use steering wheel locks, install aftermarket immobilizers, and park in secure areas to reduce theft risk.

Yes, some Kia models have been targeted due to vulnerabilities in their ignition systems. To enhance security, consider installing a steering wheel lock, using a car alarm, or adding a GPS tracker. Also, keep your vehicle in well-lit areas and lock it consistently.

There was definitely a surge in Kia thefts due to a social media challenge. Most of that affected older models without immobilizers.

If you’ve got a newer Kia, you’re likely in good shape. But hey, better safe than sorry!

Consider adding an extra layer of protection like a steering wheel lock or car alarm.

Parking in well-lit areas and using a car cover can also deter thieves. Remember, every car is a target, so taking extra precautions never hurts!

Im hoping something happens that the insurance companies notice. Had my fiancees old Ford Escape start falling apart requiring several thousands in work and took it out of service for a commuter car. This was unfortunately, late 2020. We couldn’t find cars a lot, and one dealership took advantage of her and ruined her credit with 8 checks for a car she wasn’t trying to buy. (Long story) We ended up at a KIA dealer, and they handled us nicely. Got a 2016 Sorento with about 100K miles for a heart-stopping $17,000. It was one of the few good cars on that lot, and it was for a fair rate… fast forward to now, we are upside down on the car badly. We expected this, it was a emergency purchase so she had a car that could safely go above 40mph for work. Sadly, we were hoping to at least insure it cheaply. The KIA remains on my dads insurance, and likely will until it is scrapped. Cost for full coverage, not even good full coverage, comes to $1480 a year now. We live in a rural area, there is next to no crime. This doesn’t matter to the insurance company. The car is restricted, and most companies will not insure them, none of them recognize any solution as a actual solution - so premiums stay sky high. For $300 more a year, you can insure a $50,000 truck with low deductible full coverage, and roadside assistance… for comparison.
