My Kia has problems It started making noise on the highway and then the oil light came on quickly. I was lucky to stop before the engine stopped working.
I contacted Kia through their claims system and they said my car is not covered by the engine failure extended warranty. But it also seemed like since I haven’t had it checked by a Kia mechanic yet, they don’t want to make any promises. They mostly ignored my questions about replacing the engine. The nearest Kia dealership is 100 miles away, which is why I haven’t had it towed there yet for a mechanic to check.
Has anyone managed to get their engine replaced even if it’s not covered by the extended warranty?
If it’s not covered, how much did the engine replacement cost for those who paid for it? I still have a loan on the car, and I really love it, so I would like to keep it if possible.
@Yoon
When I bought my 2016 Kia with 32K miles from the dealership, the engine failed with 500 miles left on the original 100K powertrain warranty. They replaced it with a rebuilt engine for free. The only issue was that engines were on back order, and I had to wait about 5 weeks. They provided a rental car, so it wasn’t too bad.
So, they do cover second owners. My car was a certified pre-owned vehicle, not sure if that helped.
Did you complete the KSDS Update? If you did, it should be covered by the extended warranty as long as it’s been done and the code is triggered.
My sister has a 2017+ model that had the same issue at 118K miles, and they replaced the engine under the extended warranty because she did the KSDS update.
@Mary
I checked my VIN and the KSDS was not done, it was recommended in 2021, so I think I’m out of luck.
What’s crazy is I’ve checked my VIN for recalls many times in the past 2 years while dealing with the dealership, and nothing showed up. I have all the mail from Kia and always addressed recalls. I feel like I’m going crazy about this.
Did you know you were using oil before this, or was this a new problem?
I tried a few times with Kia to get this covered, but since I’m not the first owner and it’s a 2017 model, it’s not covered under their warranty unless a recall happens.
For now, I’m just adding oil every few weeks. I’m deciding whether to keep using it until it stops or trade it in for another car.
@DanBurn
A year ago, I noticed the oil level was lower than usual at each oil change. I was told to keep adding oil and ensure regular changes, then do an engine flush at 80,000 miles. But I never got to do that because the engine stopped while I was driving to get the oil change and engine flush.
I would check the car’s trade-in value before it fails. I talked with some mechanics who said that increased oil use in Kia is a sign the engine will fail soon, it’s just a matter of when. It’s crazy there is no recall, especially since engines are catching fire and stopping on the highway. Besides using more oil, the car drives fine with no other signs.
@Yoon
Thanks for the info. If my mechanic hadn’t told me it was using oil, I wouldn’t have noticed since it drives fine. At my next oil change, I’ll ask the mechanic what to do. I might try to get another 10,000 miles since it still has under 60,000 miles left. Maybe I’ll get lucky with a recall, but I don’t count on it. Maybe Kia will act when someone gets hurt because the engine stops or catches fire on the highway.
