Why am I getting such bad mileage on my new Carnival Hybrid SXP

I’m only getting about 25 miles per gallon on highways with my new Carnival Hybrid SXP. I’m using cruise control and driving assist on freeways. Does anyone know why this could be happening? Is there something I’m missing?

I’m driving the SXP Hybrid from Massachusetts to Florida right now, and I’m getting 33-35 mpg while averaging 75-80 mph. Something seems off with yours.

Are you driving in a cold area? Winter weather can really hurt your mpg.

I’m in California. It was raining, but nothing too heavy.

This sounds strange. I’m getting way more in Southern California, and there are plenty of hills here.

Edit: Just realised yours is an SXP. Mine’s only an SX.

I doubt SX vs SXP makes a difference, but thanks for sharing your experience.

I have the SXP too, and I agree—this doesn’t sound normal. I’ve been getting 30-35 mpg regularly, even with trips to the Smoky Mountains and my daily 60/40 city-highway driving in hilly Charlotte. I always use cruise control. Could your car be in Sport mode without you noticing?

@Donna
You can’t actually change the default driving mode. I get 23-25 mpg on road trips in my SX (not hybrid). Maybe there’s something else going on here.

Maybe a dealer accidentally gave the person who posted this an ICE version instead of the hybrid?

@Donna
That’s a funny thought, but seriously, do you have a spare tyre under the second-row passenger seat? That would indicate it’s a hybrid.

Come on now, let’s be serious… that’s a good one, though.

@Jade
Do you know which drive mode you’re using?

Eco mode.

That’s odd. You should be getting much better mileage.

We just did a 4.5-hour drive in our EX hybrid, mostly going 80 mph, and we got 28 mpg. It’s our first week with the car, so we’re still figuring things out.

That’s pretty low. Do you have any plans to address it?

@Jade
There’s a lot of tech in this car—way more than I’ve had before. I’m just trying to learn all the features and see how things change after the break-in period.

Are there a lot of hills where you drive? I get about 34-35 mpg with mixed city and highway driving. Maybe try not using cruise control? I don’t use it, and I always watch my mpg closely to get the best numbers possible. Good luck figuring it out.

What’s the weather like where you are? Cold temperatures can really hurt hybrid mileage. We get around 34-38 mpg in warm weather but only 24-28 mpg when it’s cold.

I was driving from SF to LA. It rained a lot, but it wasn’t too bad.
