Telluride for less than MSRP? Anywhere near NYC?

I’m looking to buy a Telluride and hoping to get it for less than MSRP. Has anyone had luck finding one within a few hours’ drive from NYC? I’m happy to drive if I can get a deal over the phone first.

Is this specific to the NYC area? In most places, getting 4-5k off MSRP isn’t too hard.

Maybe? I’m actually on Long Island, but I’ve heard from others they’re getting offers above MSRP, and they’re telling me they’re helping me out but it’s still not a deal I want. Just want to make sure I’m not being taken advantage of.

@Malik
It’s tough to get a good deal over the phone. Go to the dealership, tell them what deal you’re after, and be prepared to walk away. If they stick to their final offer, you can say you’d like to check out a Telluride at another dealer and see if they’ll drop their price. Either they’ll give you a better deal to keep you or let you go.

@SoulSeeker
I disagree from my experience. I try to handle everything on the phone or online. Going from one dealer to another is just wasting time. Know what you want, find it in stock, and get the deal arranged before stepping into the dealership. The goal is to spend less than 30 minutes there. Make sure you get a copy of the invoice before heading to the dealership.

Thanks for the tip! That’s exactly what I’m aiming for! Have you had any luck with Kia or Hyundai dealerships?

I actually did this with Smithtown Kia on Long Island a couple of years ago. I was buying a Certified Pre-Owned model, so the situation was a bit different, but they were very easy to deal with.

@Billy
I’ll add them to my list of places to contact!

@Billy
I agree completely with this approach.

@Billy
I’ve done that with cars before, but it doesn’t always work as well with certain models.

Like I mentioned on your Palisade post, the Telluride doesn’t get discounted as much as the Palisade, but it holds its resale value better. I have a dealer partner in Northern New Jersey, but they don’t give out big discounts. Don’t listen to anyone telling you they’re getting $5000 off. There are usually special circumstances, like huge finance rebates or demo models. I deal with Kia dealers all over the country, and I know what these vehicles are selling for in many areas. The NYC area isn’t the best place to buy this vehicle. I’m from Florida and bought two top trims in 2022 and 2024 out of state. If you’re not willing to fly or ship it, you’re likely to pay more. Plus, trying to negotiate with dealers in NYC can be a pain. Most will refuse to negotiate over the phone and force you to come in. I recommend buying from out of state and having it shipped. It’ll save you time and hassle.

Thanks, this is really helpful. I’m comparing both cars .

I know these cars very well. I’ve bought four Palisade Calligraphies in the last three years and two top trim Tellurides. You’ll likely get a bigger initial discount on the Palisade, but the Telluride will hold its value better if you trade it in later. If you plan to keep the car forever, go with the Palisade. If not, the Telluride is the better choice. I also wouldn’t buy locally in the NYC area since the dealers don’t discount much. I do have a dealer in Passaic County, New Jersey who can offer a discount, but I mainly buy from out-of-state dealers in places like Atlanta and Cincinnati. Buyers usually pay to ship the car to their home and still get a better deal. If you want, send me a DM for more details.

@quinnlebron
I found the same thing. I live on Long Island, and when my daughter was going to school in Minnesota, I bought a brand new 2018 Genesis G80 and drove it home.

I agree with you completely. It sounds like I’m pushing my broker business, but I’m just giving honest advice. People are often set in their ways and prefer to buy locally, but if you’re not getting a great deal on your trade-in, there’s no reason not to buy from an area where demand is lower and ship the car to your home. It’ll save time and money. The Hyundai and Kia dealers in Northern NJ don’t discount heavily because they’re a high-volume group.
