Both the vehicle and model are good choices in my view.

If you drive in any city or traffic at all, you’ll be glad you chose the hybrid.
Hybrids have been reliable long enough that I trust them. That’s why I went with the Sportage plug-in hybrid instead of a full electric model. Full electric cars are a different topic.
The gas model has had a number of serious recalls. My hybrid has only faced software updates.
Hybrid is the way to go. The combination of the electric motor and the turbocharged four-cylinder engine makes it enjoyable to drive. The non-hybrid felt slow and underpowered. I tested both and I’m really happy with the hybrid so far.

The Niro has less cargo space than the Sportage.

Yeah, in the trunk. But for seating, it’s pretty similar. Plus, the Niro is a newer model and I think it has a nicer dashboard.
Your mechanic is probably just saying that because he won’t see you as often.
When I first got my plug-in hybrid, I went 2 months without refueling. Now I charge once a week and fill up about every two weeks. Do I regret it? Absolutely not. Every time I spot a charger, I think about how many miles I can go without gas.
I have a 2023 Hybrid Sorento. It’s been amazing so far. I’m getting around 45 mpg if I manage my driving carefully.
Go for the hybrid. It offers better mpg and more power. The 1.6L engine has proven to be more reliable than Kia’s 2 and 2.4L engines. Plus, hybrids are usually built in Korea, while gas models come from Kia’s plant in Alabama, where the quality control isn’t as good.
