I recently got an OBD II scanner as I’m preparing to tow a large trailer. Can anyone tell me what the normal and maximum engine coolant temperatures are? My scanner currently shows around 200°F, 92°C. What is the maximum temperature I should watch for before stopping to let the engine cool down while towing a trailer? I have a 2003 Sorento 3.5.
For most vehicles, including the 2003 Sorento, the normal coolant temperature usually ranges from 190°F to 220°F (88°C to 104°C). If the temperature consistently nears or surpasses 230°F (110°C), it’s advisable to pull over to avoid overheating.
You’re worried for no reason. Your car is okay the maximum temperature should be around 225°F though anything above 235 should have you worried.
The normal working temperature for car coolant is between 195-220°F (91-104°C). This temperature range is required to efficiently move heat away from the engine block and cylinder heads, hence preventing overheating. The coolant runs between the engine and the radiator, collecting heat and dispersing it through the radiator.
