For those waiting to file a claim or just learn more, this is the website for the settlement.
Remember, the final approval of the settlement hasn’t happened yet. The hearing isn’t until July, so payments won’t be issued until after that, and any appeals will need to be resolved.
Edit: You can also check Kia’s Customer Care website, scroll to the footer, and see the link to the same settlement page I shared. Even Hagens Berman, the law firm representing class members, links to it. You’re welcome.

Quick question. My car was a total loss, covered by insurance. Does this mean I can only claim my deductible?
Did you find out if that’s the case?
Not exactly. From what I read, it looks like you can only reclaim the deductible, but I haven’t been able to confirm this with the lawyers yet. You could try reaching out to them if you want, though I haven’t heard back myself.
@vincent
Honestly, it should cover the full deductible, plus the extra insurance we had to pay. I’d say they should throw in another $3,000 on top, with a cap of $7,500. It’s like they’re ignoring the fact that we now have to get new cars, and interest rates are much higher. I was at 3% on my loan, and now it’s gonna be at least 9% if not more.
Thanks for this post! My Kia got stolen a few days ago… right after I transferred the title and got new plates. I’m gonna file the claim as soon as I get the police report. People are the worst.

So are we sure the victims of theft will actually get paid? And the earliest we’d see anything is July?
Short answer: No.
Here’s the longer version: The judge will review the case in July, check how many people opted out, and look at any objections filed. If they think the settlement is fair, they’ll give final approval.
There are a couple of steps after that:
180 days from the final approval order is the claims deadline. So, if nothing changes, that’ll be January 2025.
Once the deadline passes, there’s a 30-day window for appeals. Appeals could delay payments or even cancel the settlement entirely.
Everything needs to be settled—claims processed, appeals resolved—before anyone gets paid. Realistically, we’re looking at payments starting sometime between September 2025 and March 2026, depending on delays.
Sorry if this has been asked already… We have a 2017 Kia Sportage. There’s never been a theft or even an attempt (thank goodness!). Do we qualify for anything from this settlement?

Nope, unless you’ve paid out of pocket for something, like increased insurance due to a theft or attempted theft, you wouldn’t qualify. This is a reimbursement-only settlement.
The FAQ spells it out:
60% of the Black Book value for a total loss due to a qualifying theft/attempt.
Up to $3,375 or 33% of the Black Book value for damage from a theft/attempt.
Up to $375 for insurance deductibles or increased premiums due to theft/attempt.
Up to $250 for other out-of-pocket expenses from a theft/attempt.
Up to $250 for lost income or childcare costs for getting the software upgrade.
Up to $50 for a steering wheel lock purchase, but only if the purchase was made before the software upgrade was available.
Can someone help me out here? My 2021 Soul shows up in both the “eligible for software upgrade” and “not eligible” lists. What’s going on? The settlement website says my VIN isn’t eligible, but why the overlap in the first place?
@CAROL
If your VIN says you’re not eligible, that’s it. The overlap might be due to different specs for some vehicles. It’s possible that your vehicle has different features that disqualify it, like having push-to-start instead of key ignition. If you’re sure your VIN should be included, you could always contact the lawyers for more info, but the spec differences are probably the reason.
So my Kia was stolen recently, and I’m out a $500 deductible and some personal property. Insurance is probably going up too. But everything I read says ‘reimbursement for qualifying repairs performed on or before June 7, 2023.’ What about those of us with losses after that date? I got the anti-theft lock update, but I’m wondering how they’re gonna pay all this out if the pool is only $200 million minus lawyer fees.
What happens if your car got totaled, but you didn’t have insurance? Insurance shot up to $600/month, so I parked it in the yard and drove a beater until I could sell the Kia. Then someone stole it, went joyriding, crashed into a neighbor’s house, wrecked their fence, a tree, and part of the porch. The car’s a total loss, airbags deployed, and I’m still paying it off.
