Key stuck in 2009 Kia Sportage—won't turn off completely?

The key in my 2009 Kia Sportage is stuck. It turns but won’t turn off completely, so I can’t remove it. The vehicle is in Park, but I’m not sure what’s causing this issue. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Make sure the car is fully in Park. Sometimes the shifter doesn’t engage all the way. Try stepping on the brake, shifting to Neutral, then back into Park, and holding it forward while trying to turn the key.

I’ve had this issue before. Holding the shifter firmly in Park worked for me. It’s worth a try!

If that doesn’t work, the problem might be with the ignition switch. Tapping the head of the key lightly while turning it off could help.

Worst case, you can disconnect the battery terminals to shut the car off temporarily. It’s not a fix, but it’ll stop the engine until you can resolve the issue.

You could also try removing the fuel pump fuse to stop the engine if the key won’t turn it off.

Check the shift interlock solenoid. If it’s faulty, it might not be releasing the key properly.
