Just got a 2017 kia sedona … does apple carplay need to be plugged in?

i picked up a 2017 kia sedona yesterday, but can’t get apple carplay to work, and my partner can’t get android auto either. it’s grayed out on the menu when we connect over bluetooth. does it need to be plugged in? is there no wireless option?

yep, it needs to be plugged in. wireless carplay wasn’t a thing until around 2020. you can grab a wireless adapter on amazon if you really want it.

lol shopping for one as we speak

@Mickey
i have a motorola adapter that works great!

even new kias don’t always come with wireless carplay. your 2017 definitely doesn’t have it :joy:

it wasn’t available back in 2017 for any car.

my 2017 forte needs to be plugged in with usb for all android auto features to work, so yeah, it probably needs a cable connection for your setup too.

ugh, i figured 2017 would be modern enough to avoid all these cords lol. now i have to find an old usb to new usbc cable :woman_facepalming:

@Mickey
2017 was seven years ago – ancient in tech terms! wireless apple carplay first appeared around 2015, but only mercedes started using it in ‘17. android auto wireless didn’t show up until 2020.

@Mickey
my 2019 niro doesn’t have wireless either. i got a wireless adapter, but it only works with either android auto or apple carplay, not both.

i had to buy a special cord that was specifically compatible with apple carplay. regular usb wouldn’t work.

whenever i plug my phone into the usb, my car thinks it’s an ipod :sweat_smile:
