Thinking about getting a PHEV but not sure if it’s worth the extra money over a hybrid. Does the 32 miles on battery actually save much on gas?
It really depends on where you are. Where I live, electricity is about 36% more expensive than gas, so I’m paying a bit more per mile to drive electric. Even with cheaper electricity, it might take a while to see any savings. But driving in electric mode is pretty fun! If you’re watching your budget, I’d stick with the hybrid.
I went for the PHEV since electricity is cheaper here and better for the environment compared to gas. But yeah, it depends on where you are. I have a short commute, around 19 miles round trip, so I mostly run on electric. My current tank has lasted me over 500 miles with barely any gas used.
I’ve got the hybrid, and it automatically switches to battery mode when it can. If you drive slow, it really helps with gas consumption. But at higher speeds, it has to lug around the extra weight, which doesn’t help as much.
I have the 24’ PHEV and love the 32-mile range on electric. I’ve driven about 1800 miles using only around 2 gallons of gas over the last few months for short trips. My charging station says I used about 577 kWh, which cost me around $75. If I was using gas, that would’ve cost about $206 based on $4 per gallon. My math might be off, but driving in EV mode is great. It’s quiet, and I don’t have to run the engine while stuck in traffic.
