Does the new steering wheel work with older EV6 models

Has anyone tried fitting this newer steering wheel on a 2022 EV6 GT-Line? I’m considering getting the GT-Line, but the stock steering wheel feels a bit plain. The newer one looks so much better, especially with the black and white seats.

As someone who works on cars, I can say it will likely fit physically. The bigger issue is whether the controls and airbag will work with the older car’s system. It’s probably compatible, but someone would need to test it out with the parts in hand.

@Brynn
I think the refreshed model has an updated infotainment system, which might mean different control signals and wiring.

I’ll keep an eye out for a used steering wheel from a wrecked car and give it a try when I can.

@Brynn
Just crash-test it to see if the airbag works… joking, but you get the idea.

Try out the new one first if you can. It’s a lot thicker than the older EV6 wheel. Personally, I prefer how the old one feels, even though the new one looks nicer.

I asked my dealer about this during my last service. They said it’s not compatible with the older Gen 5 system.

I just want a yolk so I can see the instrument cluster clearly.

Yolks are a bad idea. They don’t offer any safety improvements and are just an accident waiting to happen.

Plus, they’re messy. Ever tried driving with egg yolk all over? It’s chaos!

@Aydin
I know it’s a low bar, but thank you for spelling everything correctly here. It’s refreshing.

Thanks! Finally putting my biology degree to some use here.

If steering was fully electronic, I could see yolks making sense.

@howdyrobert
It’s already partly electronic. You turn the wheel, and a servo moves the tires.

Yeah, but not with variable steering ratios. That would make a big difference.

I’d settle for being able to customise the instrument cluster layout. Some newer Kias let you move the speedometer to the centre.

@Aydin
I barely look at the speed on mine since I use the HUD. But sometimes it surprises me when I see it out of the corner of my eye mid-turn… makes me think something is flying at me.

My partner hated the HUD, but I liked it. Still, not enough to justify the GT-Line for us. The digital mirror was also a letdown. These tech features can be helpful or just distracting, depending on the person.

If you’re feeling creative, just cut the steering wheel apart and make your own custom design.

Totally agree with you on wanting a yolk .
