Check engine light, rough idle, and loud knocking... any advice?

My 2017 Kia Forte LX started with a check engine light on Monday. It had a rough idle, loss of power, and some misfiring. By Wednesday, the light went off and it ran fine for a day. But now, the light is back, it’s super loud when the RPMs rise, and there’s a knocking noise with a choppy idle. The OBD2 scanner showed code P0017 (camshaft/crankshaft correlation) and something about intake/exhaust VVT. I also installed a cold air intake last Friday. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Code P0017 usually points to a camshaft position sensor or a timing issue. Did you check the wiring and connections near the sensor?

I haven’t yet, but I’ll look into it. The engine noises have me a bit worried it could be something bigger.

Did you double-check the installation of the cold air intake? If a sensor got unplugged or damaged during the process, it might explain the issue.

Good suggestion! I inspected the area but didn’t notice anything loose. I’ll check again to be sure.

It might be worth replacing the camshaft position sensor. Sometimes these sensors can fail intermittently before giving out completely.

That’s what the mechanic suggested too. I’ll see if swapping it fixes the problem.

Since it’s running rough and loud, I’d also check the timing chain. A loose or stretched chain could cause these symptoms and trigger P0017.

Yikes, that sounds serious. Hopefully, it’s just a sensor, but I’ll ask my mechanic about the timing chain too.

If it’s still under warranty, take it to a Kia dealership. They can diagnose it more thoroughly, especially for engine issues like this.

Unfortunately, it’s out of warranty. But I’ll find a good mechanic who knows these engines well. Thanks for the advice!
