Can You Start and Stop Charging Frequently, or Will It Hurt the Battery?

Hallo…

We’ve got a Cee’d plug-in hybrid and usually charge the battery when the sun’s out and we’re generating solar energy. We also have a stationary solar battery, and we’re trying to avoid having one battery charge the other.
Here’s the tricky part: on cloudy days, the stationary battery starts charging, but every few minutes, we might get just enough extra energy to charge the car. So, we’d be in a situation where we’re charging the car for 5 minutes, then stopping for 5 minutes, and repeating that cycle.
Just to clarify, we’re doing this with a standard 230V outlet (for Europe).
:unamused:
So, my question is: Would it harm the car battery (or anything else in the car) if we keep turning the power on and off every few minutes? Has anyone dealt with this or know if it’s okay to do?
In anticipation…

These days, frequent charging and discharging of lithium-ion batteries doesn’t cause them any serious harm. In fact, it’s usually advised against entirely draining your battery before charging.

you don’t have to worry about seriously harming the battery when charging and discharging your device frequently. Just make an effort to stay away from severe weather and deep discharges.

:smile:While regular charging is OK, high heat or cold can hasten the degrading process of batteries, so try to keep your battery from getting too hot or cold.

In general, periodic full discharge cycles are not as beneficial to battery health as frequent partial charges. :pensive:
